Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa has intimated on the formation of a powerful coalition that he believes will topple President William Ruto from power in the 2027 General Election.
According to Wamalwa, the formidable force will stage a tough contest against Ruto’s administration with the aim of taking over the nation’s reins.
He revealed that the team mainly consists of leaders who took part in propelling the late President Mwai Kibaki to power in 2002 under the Kenya African National Union (KANU) party.
“We’ve learnt our lessons, we know that he will try to divide us, already there are those being prompted to go [on] their own but we are assembling a team that will send Ruto home in the first round,” he told NTV on Monday.
“Justin Muturi joined our team, Fred Matiang’i (former Interior Cabinet Secretary) is joining our team, the team is coming together. Martha Karua is already in our team. You see that 2002 team coming back together, and we are rebuilding the NARC moment for 2027.”
Other political leaders who are part of the coalition include former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka among others.
“We want Kenyans to have hope. Though you might suffer under the heavy taxes. June is coming and there will be more taxes,” he added.
Jubilee Party branch leaders have thrown their weight behind Matiang’i as their preferred presidential candidate.
The party’s officials said the endorsement positions Matiang’i as a frontrunner for the political outfit’s official flagbearer, setting the stage for fierce competition within the Azimio coalition for the 2027 presidential ticket.
In July last year, Matiang’i inked a consultancy agreement with Canadian lobbying firm Dickens & Madson to support his efforts to become President in 2027.
Documents seen by Citizen Digital at the time showed that Matiang’i had already paid a down payment of $65,000 (Ksh.8.4 million) at the time of the agreement and would also pay a retainer of $250,000 (Ksh.32.3 million).
Likewise, Karua’s NARC-Kenya officially rebranded to the People’s Liberation Party (PLP), with an aim of aligning with a progressive, people-centred agenda focused on unity, transparency, and accountability.
The party also aims to attract the younger generation, particularly Gen Z.
Karua explained that NARC-Kenya, formed nearly 20 years ago, had become less familiar to younger voters. The transition to PLP is meant to revitalize its appeal and reaffirm its commitment to democratic ideals.
“We have introduced new colours—purple, lilac, and white—while maintaining our identity as a flower party. Previously symbolized by a green rose, we now embrace the purple rose, which represents love, friendship, and peace. Our slogan is ‘Unite – Liberate,” she said.
The bigger conundrum remains to be who the hinted coalition will front as their flagbearer, since most individuals Wamalwa has mentioned, including himself, have expressed interest in the country’s top seat.
