A team of students from various universities here in Kenya who represented the country at the global ICT competition in China, were on Monday hosted at the National Assembly.
In the competition held on May 25 the students representing Kenya, delivered an exemplary performance bagged four major international awards in the tracks present; Computing, Network, Cloud and Innovation.
Hosted by the National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, the students were encouraged to advance the country at the global technology stage.
“Life is a continuous journey, and success is a constantly moving target. I warmly applaud our brilliant students for their resounding victory at the Huawei ICT Competition Global Final. However, I also challenge them not to relent. Let this achievement be a stepping stone. Continue to push forward, and leverage emerging technologies to create practical solutions for Kenya and the world,” said Wetangula.
Mark Omaiko, a second year student in Machakos University majoring in Cloud Computing and Information Security expressed pride in representing the nation in the global competition, noting that Kenya is now an emerging powerhouse in the ICT sector.
“This win is not for us individually, but for Kenya and all Kenyans. We are proud to have put Kenya on the global map as an ICT powerhouse, and we encourage fellow students to register and join similar programs in the future. This has been more than a competition—it’s been the experience of a lifetime”, said Mark as he reflected on his achievements at a global level.
The Huawei-initiated competition made significant steps in the journey to gender inclusion in the STEM field, with the country fielding an all-woman team that bagged the coveted Women in Technology Award at the competition.
Rukia Mwari (Telecommunication Engineering) and Banzy Nyaga (Mathematics and Computer Science) from JKUAT, along with Beverlyne Ndombi and Ifrah Hussein, Electrical and Communication Engineering students from Moi University, represented the country in the Huawei ICT Competition Global Final 2024–2025, held in Shenzhen, China from May 20–24, 2025.
Huawei Kenya’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Stephen Zang commented on the increase in girls embracing ICT career paths and how the female participants in the competition are a testament to the surge in girls looking to journey into the ICT sector, further referring to them as the future leaders of the digital economy.
The competition is part of a memorandum signed by the Asian tech-giant and the national government in a bid to align with the broader national strategy to strengthen digital skills and bridge the gap between academia and the industry.
