Victor Wanyama shocked Kenyan soccer fans by announcing his return to the national team.
The defensive midfielder spent only a year in international retirement before reversing his decision.
Wanyama has returned to the Kenyan national team, but is still looking for a new club.
Wanyama’s contract with CF Montreal, a Major League Soccer club, recently expired on Jan. 1, 2023. The midfielder is now a free agent and can sign with any club that wants him.
One team Wanyama has flirted with on social media is his former employers Glasgow Celtic. However, it remains to be seen whether the reigning Scottish Premiership champions are interested in keeping the player or not.
Kenyan soccer fans are hoping that Wanyama will be able to guide the fortunes of the national team in 2023.

During his time at Celtic, Wanyama won two Scottish Premiership titles from 2011 to 2013 and one Scottish Cup. Wanyama’s time and success in Glasgow put him on the European soccer map and brought him to the attention of English Premier League club Southampton.
Southampton paid Celtic €14.5 million for the defensive midfielder in July 2013.
After three seasons with Southampton, Wanyama was sold to Tottenham Hotspur for €14.4 million. The deal reunited Wanyama with former Southampton coach Mauricio Pochettino.
In his first season in London, Wanyama played 47 games in all competitions, scoring five goals. However, he featured less and less in the following three seasons.
In March 2020, Spurs terminated Wanyama’s contract, allowing him to join CF Montreal in Major League Soccer on a free transfer.
The defensive midfielder played 90 times for CF Montreal, scoring five goals and contributing four assists. In the 2022 MLS season, Wanyama helped the club finish third overall with 65 points from 34 games.
The Canadian team finished just two points behind MLS Supporters’ Shield winner Los Angeles FC, which also won the MLS Cup.
The 2022 season was the best in CF Montreal’s club history, and the midfielder played a big part in that success.
Wanyama played 32 MLS matches, in which he scored one goal and contributed three assists. He also helped CF Montreal reach the semifinals of the Canadian Championship (national cup competition) and the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions League.
Wanyama is only 31 years old and could return to Europe. As a player on loan, Wanyama can also switch clubs outside of the January transfer window.
However, the January transfer market could be the best opportunity for the midfielder to join a new club. In December, there had been rumors that Wanyama would return to Celtic in 2023.
Former CF Montreal right-back, Canadian international Alistair Johnston, signed with Celtic after playing alongside Wanyama for the Canadian club in 2022.
Johnston sent Kenyan soccer fans into a frenzy when he hinted on social media that Wanyama would be joining him in Glasgow. According to reports from Scotland, Celtic is looking to sign more players this month.
