Manchester City defender John Stones scored a last-minute winner in a thrilling 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday, propelling the team to the top of the Premier League and marking a club record of 31 consecutive league games unbeaten.
City controlled possession throughout the match at Molineux but found themselves stunned early on when Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen finished a perfect cross from Nelson Semedo in the seventh minute. Semedo later squandered a golden opportunity to extend Wolves’ lead in a one-on-one against Ederson, who made a crucial save.
However, City equalized in the 33rd minute when defender Josko Gvardiol picked up the ball in space and curled a superb shot past Jose Sa. Stones then netted the decisive goal in stoppage time, which underwent a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) check before being confirmed, much to the joy of manager Pep Guardiola and the traveling fans.
With this victory, City topped the table on goal difference with 20 points, two ahead of Liverpool, who were set to face Chelsea later that day. Meanwhile, Wolves remained at the bottom of the league with just one point and no wins so far this season.
