A Nigerian woman living in Japan has sparked online discussion after sharing a video of a political candidate campaigning on a public street.
While walking through her city in Japan @naijagirlinjapan came cross several men wearing yellow jackets and distributing campaign flyers.
She soon realized that one of them was the candidate seeking an elective position in the region.
Candidate campaigns without a large entourage
The politician personally spoke to passers-by, explained his manifesto and shook hands with members of the public.
The scene surprised the content creator, who compared the calm campaign to the convoys, sirens and large security entourages often associated with political activities in Nigeria.
“You are the one? Wow,” she said after meeting the candidate.
She then asked whether he was contesting for governorship.
The woman said the campaign appeared modest, with the aspirant standing on the roadside and handing out flyers instead of relying on a flashy public display.
“This is how they campaign. Simple. Standing on the road and sharing flyers. I don’t know if we can learn a thing or two from this,” she told her followers.
The video prompted online users to debate the differences between political campaigns in Japan and in Africa.
Some praised the candidate for reaching voters personally, while others noted that campaign styles vary from one country to another.
