A 24-year-old woman who jumped into the Indian Ocean in an alleged attempt to commit suicide while on board a ferry christened MV Kwale is unfit to stand trial.
According to a police report filed at Shelly Beach police station, the suspect Nadzua Mbega Ngao was released unconditionally after medical treatment notes revealed that she was mentally ill.
“Upon perusal of her belongings, it was established that she had treatment notes from the hospital indicating that she has been battling mental illness and that was one of the grounds police officers used to release her from custody,” part of the police report reads.
She was later handed over to her relatives to take her to the hospital for treatment.
Ngao on Tuesday, July 18, 2023, had jumped into the Indian Ocean while on board MV Kwale in an attempt to commit suicide by drowning.
However, she was moments later rescued by fishermen.
At the time of the incident, it was reported that she was heading to Kizimbani Kinango county, from her workplace in Majengo Mombasa where she does casual jobs to fend for herself.
She has since been reunited with her family in Kinango.
