A section of women in Ruiru, Kiambu County have taken to the streets over the sale of illicit brew in the area.
The women, drawn from Kiratina village, have criticized administrators for what they termed as failure to address the vice.
“The police officers and chiefs are doing little to tame the vice. It is unfortunate that our men are turning out to be unproductive due to alcohol,” a protestor told Citizen Digital.
Carrying placards and twigs, the women matched to the local market center, calling for immediate intervention.
“We demand prompt action. My husband died in one of the bars. I was called to pick his body as the bar remained open,” said another.
According to the protestors, men and youth in the area consume illicit alcohol and smoke bhang for hours on end.
“We hope this will be addressed by the relevant bodies,” the protestors added.
The protest comes barely a week after President William Ruto called on the provincial administration in the Central Kenya region to work out a plan to end alcohol abuse in the region.
The Head of State said the substance abuse amongst the youth is worrying and asked the county government’s to join the national government in the fight.
