Women MPs to wear Kenyan designers in support of SMEs

Kenya Women’s Parliamentary Association (Kewopa Kenya) has launched a campaign to support local designers and manufacturers and amplify the enterprises’ visibility.

In a statement, the union in conjunction with the Kenya Women Senators (KEWOSA) will run the campaign for a week from, Tuesday, February 21 and has called on Kenyans to participate by wearing locally made African designs using #WomeninPoliticsKE #SupportingLocalDesignersKE #BuyKenyaBuildKenya hashtags on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

The MPs say the campaign is aimed at supporting by consuming locally produced goods and services and will see the women parliamentarians wear locally made items.

“The campaign will run for a week, which will entail Supporting Local Designers. The Women Members of Parliament will wear outfits made by their local designers for all Parliamentary sessions this week. The campaign seeks to support local industries by consuming locally produced goods and services,” part of the statement reads.

The lawmakers noted that Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) make a great contribution to employment creation, wealth creation, poverty alleviation, and income generation.

This project is also in line with the associations’ mandate of women’s empowerment.

“The Association whose mandate is to strengthen the participation of women in all spheres through capacity development, partnership building and strategic community engagement, will extend this support by wearing outfits made by their local designers for all Parliamentary sessions this week. The female lawmakers’ campaign will amplify the visibility of the Small and Medium-sized enterprises in Kenya- that contribute to employment creation, wealth creation poverty alleviation and income generation” the MPs noted.

“We need to Promote local designers and empower our tailors. We should revive local industries.”
