A 45-year-old man died after falling from the fifth floor of a house under construction in Nairobi’s Lucky Summer area.

John Kakuta was among workers at the site when he slid and fell to the ground with police and witnesses saying that he suffered serious head and rib injuries.

He was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead On arrival.

Police say they are investigating the incident with an aim of knowing if there were safety measures that had been put in place for the workers.

“The building had reached the seventh floor at the time of the incident and there were more than ten other workers at the site,” police said.

Workers at the scene were briefly questioned as part of the probe into the incident.

In Kenya, most workers die in such conditions and little is done to compensate or take action on issues of negligence on the part of the contractors.

Elsewhere, an eight-storey building under construction collapsed on Sunday night in Nairobi’s Mirema Drive area.

Police said no injuries were reported after the structure collapsed around 10pm leaving area residents chocking in dust.

It is not clear what caused the collapse.

Search and rescue teams visited the scene on Monday to check if anyone was trapped under the rubble.

Authorities and the contractors have not established the cause of the collapse, as those involved are put on the spot.

Officials from Nairobi City County, police and the National Construction Authority are investigating the incident.
