Sarah Koske, the regional manager of the National Campaign against Drug Abuse (NACADA), highlighted that the Western region has emerged as the highest in alcohol consumption and mental health issues. She made these remarks during the commemoration of the International Day Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse at Malaba Township Primary School. Koske referenced recent research conducted in 2022, indicating that out of the eight regions surveyed, the Western region accounted for 23 percent of cases.

“The region has overtaken Central region, which led in 2017’s research. We have taken the cup; it’s here with us. What are we going to do with the cup? Do we celebrate?” she asked.
“To make matters worse, Western region is leading in chang’aa consumption and traditional brew (busaa), an indication that we have taken all the cups!

“In the next three years, when the next research will be conducted, we need to wake up and work together to reverse this embarrassing scenario. Taking children to school is a problem, and so, is running families.”

Mental health issues in the region are primarily attributed to excessive alcohol consumption and substance abuse, requiring unified efforts in Busia and across the area. Amagoro Assistant County Commissioner Titus Kiptoo Kosgei underscored these concerns, noting that Teso North alone discards 500 liters of illicit liquor daily, with significant prevalence in Changaa and Kangara consumption.

“Teso North leads in the county in the production, smuggling, and consumption of illicit liquor,” ACC Kiptoo remarked, urging local authorities and police to remain vigilant in safeguarding future generations given the region’s prominent role in production and consumption.

NACADA has established an office in Busia as part of its strategy to combat drug abuse, emphasizing prevention as a key priority. Ken Marau, the new NACADA county coordinator, pledged to collaborate closely with stakeholders in this endeavor, aiming to contribute to a drug-free Kenya.

Malaba Municipality Manager Francis Asoyong expressed gratitude to NACADA for selecting Malaba as the venue for this year’s International Day Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. He highlighted the town’s strategic importance as a porous border and gateway to East and Central Africa.
