Young people staged a protest outside a school in Nyahururu on Sunday, where President Ruto had attended a service.
President Ruto, his deputy Rigathi Gachagua, and Kenya Kwanza MPs were present for the consecration of ACK’s Bishop Samson Mburu. The protesters, chanting “Bado Mapambano,” opposed the Finance Bill 2024 while carrying Kenyan flags and placards.
When anti-riot police arrived, the Gen Z protesters sang the first stanza of Kenya’s National Anthem. Earlier, President Ruto expressed pride in the youth for stepping forward tribeless and peacefully to be counted, acknowledging their actions as part of their democratic duty.
He assured that his administration would engage with them on their concerns and emphasized that his government, in collaboration with young people, aims to build a better country.
“Our young people have stepped forward to engage in the affairs of their country. They have done a democratic duty to stand and be recognized and I want to tell you that we are going to have a conversation with you so that we can identify your issues and we can work together as a nation and streamline your issues,” he said.
“I am very proud of our young people. They have stepped forward tribeless, they have stepped forward peacefully and I want to tell them we are going to engage so that together we can build a better nation. What I want to encourage them is that we are concerned about their issues.”
