Susan Wambui, an Inspector of Police who was apprehended on charges of bribery last month, has been granted bail.

According to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), Wambui denied bribery charges at the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court and was freed on Ksh300,000 cash bail or an alternative bond of Ksh500,000.

The officer faced accusations of accepting a bribe, which is in violation of section 6(1) as read with Section 18(1) of the bribery Act No.47 of 2016.

“The accused person in this case took plea yesterday, before the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court. She pleaded not guilty to charges of receiving a bribe contrary to section 6(1) as read with Section 18(1) of the bribery Act No.47 of 2016, and was released on a cash bail of Ksh300,000/= or Bond of Ksh500, 000/= with a surety of the same amount. The case will be mentioned on 22nd August 2023,” EACC said in a statement.

The incident leading to Wambui’s arrest occurred on July 28, 2023, after the EACC initiated an inquiry into allegations of bribery involving her.

The EACC, based on their findings, recommended that Inspector Muiruri be charged with two counts of soliciting and receiving a bribe.

The alleged offences were said to have taken place on April 25, 2021, and involved the Police Inspector reportedly soliciting a bribe from a complainant to facilitate the release of his pregnant girlfriend, who had been detained at Kasarani Police Station.
Lawyer Ahmednasir reacts to officer arrest

The arrest of the officer caught lawyer Ahmednasir Abdulahi’s attention who called out EACC for seemingly ‘targeting’ police officers and minor offenders while ‘turning’ a blind eye to larger corruption cases involving high-ranking government officials.

“All Kenyans of goodwill, led by Inspector General of Police Mr. Koome must fight and stop this malicious and discriminatory scheme that targets the police. Why is EACC Kenya obsessed with police officers who earn Kshs 30k a month? What is this madness and obsession with the small fish?” He posed.

“When will EACC go after the Governors, judges, Cabinet Secretaries of this government and the previous administration who steal/stole billion? Stupid Idiots…leave the police officers and do your job properly…go after those who steal tens of Millions daily…not the police officer who gets 500 shillings to buy unga for his 5 kids,” he concluded.
