Seventeen families in several villages in Kochia, Rangwe, Homa Bay County, were forced to spend Sunday night in the cold as others sought refuge in neighbouring homes after their houses were blown off by a heavy windstorm following heavy rains.
The heavy wind affected residents of Nyarut, Kombogo and Lower Kowili villages.
According to the area chief Eucabeth Obila, the roofs of over 17 houses were blown off leaving the families in the cold to salvage other property during the incident.
Mrs Obila said household property of an unknown value was destroyed in the incident, adding that three churches were also blown off by the wind.
She stated that several crop farms were also swept by raging floods.
The area chief urged the State Department of Disaster Management to assist the now-homeless families.
