A 60-year-old man is undergoing treatment at Longisa County Referral Hospital after his 22-year-old son threw him into a 20-feet-deep pit following a land dispute in Emitiot village, Bomet County.
The victim, Samuel Tanui, spent two days in the pit without being noticed and on the third day he managed to make a loud noise after hearing some voices of people crossing meters from the pit, attracting them to his rescue.
Neighbours mobilized themselves and the old man was rescued and rushed to the hospital having some bruises on his back.
According to Emitiot sub-location assistant chief Leny Ngeno, the suspect, Charles Kiplangat Rotich, was arrested after returning home at night thinking his father had died.
Police officers from Longisa pounced on him immediately after he stepped into the compound and is currently held at Longisa police station.
He is said to have committed the act after his father refused to allow him to sell a piece of family land.
“We are happy that it didn’t rain during the period the old man was inside the pit. The story could have been different, it’s not easy for a man of his age to spend two nights in a cold place considering he also starved for that period,” added the chief.
