A 40-year-old fisherman drowned in the waters of Lake Victoria near Sukru Island beach in Suba North constituency after a strong wind accompanied by heavy rains hit his boat on Thursday evening.

The deceased identified as Julius Okoth Oyugi, a fisherman at Sukru Island beach, left the island for the neighboring Sota beach when the strong winds prevailed in the lake which caused his death.

The fisherman who was alone in the boat was trying to get hold of the boat paddle which accidentally dropped into the lake after the waves hit his boat.

Sukru Island Beach Management Unit Chairperson (BMU) Peter Juma says Oyugi drowned and died instantly while trying to get hold of the peddle leaving behind his boat.

According to the BMU chairperson, the fisherman was sailing his boat from Sukru Island to Sota beach when he met the unfortunate incident that claimed his life.

The search for the body of the deceased has been launched by the local fishermen.

Juma calls on fishermen and other lake users to always adhere to water transport regulations to avert cases of drowning.
