Car influencer and automotive enthusiast James Wehr, 27, lost his life in the early hours of Sunday, September 13, 2026, when the McLaren he was travelling in veered out of control, struck a tree and erupted in flames in Irvine, California.
A second, as-yet-unidentified person also died in the crash.
What happened to James Wehr?
According to the Irvine Police Department, as cited by PEOPLE, the collision occurred at approximately 12:18 a.m. at the intersection of Culver Drive and Deerfield Avenue.
Witnesses reported that the 2019 McLaren had been stationary at a red light before accelerating sharply the moment the signal changed.
The vehicle then mounted a kerb and collided with a tree at high speed, with the force of the impact splitting the car clean in half.
Both occupants were trapped inside as the wreckage caught fire. Officers and Orange County Fire Authority firefighters arrived at the scene shortly after but were unable to save the two men.
It remains unclear who was behind the wheel at the time.
Who was James Wehr?
Born in Perth, Australia, on August 17, 1999, Wehr relocated to the United States with his family before carving out a prominent name for himself in Southern California’s automotive scene.
Alongside his father Simon, he co-founded South OC Cars and Coffee, a weekly meet-up based in San Clemente that expanded from a modest gathering into a highly anticipated event drawing hundreds to thousands of classic, luxury and performance vehicles each week.
His mother Sarah and wife Emma were also regular fixtures in the community he helped build.
Roughly an hour before the fatal crash, Wehr shared a social media post that appeared to show a police traffic stop in nearby Newport Beach, images that took on a deeply unsettling significance in the wake of his death.
