Wycliffe Oparanya’s son Ian has stirred conversation online after sharing a candid post criticising polygamous family structures, a stance that many found striking given his own upbringing.
Ian, who is the son of the Cabinet Secretary for Co-operatives and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development, published the post on Facebook hours ago, drawing on two prominent Kenyan political families to make his argument.
Ian Oparanya takes a dig at polygamous unions
Using senator Bonnie Khalwale’s large family as his starting point, Ian argued that polygamous households tend to create systems of dependency rather than genuine empowerment.
“When I saw Khalwale’s big family, I thought to myself, people think that coming from big families is a blessing. Most of the time it’s a curse, especially the polygamous ones,” he wrote.
He added that powerful fathers in such setups often empower children in ways that still keep them subordinate.
He went further, claiming that in many such families, children spend their lives competing for the father’s attention and validation rather than forging independent paths.
“In most of this families you will find 50 years old who have nothing just depending on their fathers,” he noted.
To illustrate his point, Ian turned to the Odinga family, arguing that Raila Odinga rose to greatness precisely because he chose his own path, unlike his brother Oburu, whom he described as their father’s chosen heir.
“Oburu Odinga who was his father’s heir is here enjoying Raila’s glory,” Ian wrote.
Does Oparanya’s son dislike polygamy?
The post quickly attracted attention, with one user, Raphael Shakaba Muhati Rimba, calling out what he saw as a glaring contradiction.
“You’re the wrong person to talk about monogamy. Your a product of polygamy bro,” Rimba wrote.
Ian did not shy away from the challenge, responding with characteristic bluntness.
“Raphael Shakaba Muhati Rimba that’s why I am advising you about polygamy. It’s because I do not like it 😂,” he replied.
The exchange adds a layer of personal context to Ian’s views. His father is a polygamous politician who has two wives and previously introduced Mary Biketi as his girlfriend, openly acknowledging that both wives are aware of the relationship.
Ian’s willingness to publicly distance himself from a lifestyle his father embodies has clearly resonated with many, while also leaving others questioning whether he is the right messenger for the conversation.
