A Kiambu couple is celebrating after welcoming quintuplets through normal delivery at Thika County Referral Hospital, bringing their total number of children to seven.
Mercy Kanini, the mother of the newborns, recounted how events unfolded on the day of delivery, saying one of the babies had already begun arriving by the time medical staff could assess her properly.
“When I got here, one of the babies was already coming out, and I called the doctor who came to check on me and wanted to process my going to the theatre for a C-section,” she said.
Kanini said she was initially set to undergo a caesarean section, but the procedure was called off after doctors determined she could safely deliver all five babies without surgical intervention.
She added that she went into labour carrying only four babies in expectation, meaning the fifth came as a complete surprise to both her family and the medical team.
How Kanini Felt Welcoming Five Babies at Once
Rather than anxiety, Kanini said the experience was filled with warmth and calm.
“I was not scared; I was very happy, and the nurses and doctors have attended to me and my babies very well. They are not my first children; I have a firstborn and a second born already. This was my third delivery,” she said.
Her husband, Evans Nyamuhanga, shared in the joy but was candid about the weight of the moment.
The father said he had braced himself for four children, not five, and acknowledged that the road ahead would require considerable support.
“This is a very difficult situation and at the same time a very happy moment for my family. I would like to ask for assistance from the county and my governor to stand by us in raising these kids,” Evans said.
He confirmed that the county government had already arranged an ambulance for the family and expressed gratitude for that gesture.
Even so, he continued to appeal to well-wishers to rally around the newborns to ensure they remain healthy, safe and well cared for as they grow.
The family’s story has drawn attention to the immense joy, as well as the practical challenges, that come with welcoming multiple births, particularly for families in need of community and institutional support.
