Details shared by police now show that a student pilot and a flying instructor lost their lives after a light aircraft belonging to the Kenya School of Flying crashed in the Kajiado area.

The aircraft was carrying two occupants when it went down during what authorities described as a scheduled training flight. One of the victims died at the scene of the crash, while the second was rushed to hospital but could not be saved.

Two Lives Lost in Kajiado Crash

“We had two souls on board. One victim died at the scene, and the other was rushed to the hospital and died due to his injuries,” police said in a statement following the incident.

The aircraft was on a routine training exercise when the tragedy occurred, cutting short what would have been a standard session between a student and their instructor.

Poor Weather Blamed for the Accident

Investigators have attributed the crash to adverse weather conditions at the time of the flight. Poor visibility and difficult flying conditions are understood to have played a central role in bringing the aircraft down.

Before the fatal crash, the pilot tried to crash-land.

“Poor visibility occasioned by mist in the morning caused this. They tried to crash-land but unfortunately, the plane crashed on the ground. According to sources, the student was in advanced training,” Police commander Maureen said.

The flight school which operates the aircraft involved trains student pilots across various stages of their aviation education, and training flights of this nature are a regular part of the curriculum.

The deaths mark a significant loss for Kenya’s aviation training community, with both a learner and an experienced instructor perishing in the same incident. Authorities are expected to carry out a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
