Professional wrestler and musician Andy ‘The Butcher’ Williams died on Saturday after suffering a medical emergency during an independent wrestling bout.
He was 48 years old.
What we know about The Butcher’s death
The incident took place at Mr Smalls Theatre in Millvale, Pennsylvania, during a tag-team match organised by Enjoy Wrestling. Williams was competing alongside his long-time partner Jesse ‘The Blade’ Guilmette when he collapsed in the ring.
Medical personnel rushed to the scene and administered CPR before he was transported to hospital. Emergency dispatch audio reportedly suggested that Williams had struck his head on a ring post during the match.
The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that Williams passed away in hospital at 9:43 p.m. local time, approximately one hour after the incident occurred.
An official cause of death has not yet been released.
Who was The Butcher
Before finding fame in professional wrestling, Williams had already carved out a significant legacy in the music world.
He was a founding member and rhythm guitarist of metalcore band Every Time I Die, contributing to all nine of the group’s studio albums across a career spanning from 1998 to the band’s breakup in 2022.
At the time of his death, he had been working on new material with his latest project, Atomic Rule.
Williams made his national wrestling debut in 2019, stepping onto AEW Dynamite under the ‘Butcher’ persona.
He quickly formed a fan-favourite tag team with Guilmette, and the pair competed across both AEW and Ring of Honour. Their AEW contracts wrapped up in June 2026, just weeks before Saturday’s tragic events unfolded.
Throughout his career, Williams earned wide respect for his ability to excel in two demanding and very different fields simultaneously, a balance that few performers have managed at a comparable level.
AEW released a statement mourning Williams, describing him as a trailblazing performer who had earned the admiration of peers across both industries.
Former WWE champion CM Punk was among the high-profile names to publicly pay tribute following the news of his passing.
Fans and fellow performers from the wrestling and music communities have continued to share their condolences online.
