A couple from Bunda district in Tanzania’s Mara region lost their lives when their motorcycle collided with a sand lorry on September 24, 2026, leaving their family devastated and searching for answers.
Philipo Mtaki, 38, and his wife Ester Nyota, 33, were travelling along a road in Salama ward near Olympus Secondary School when the accident occurred.
According to family members who spoke to GADI TV, Philipo was riding the motorcycle to drop Ester at a bus station for her journey to Dar es Salaam when the tragedy unfolded.
Godfrey Gola, Philipo’s father, told GADI TV that the sand lorry allegedly merged onto the road without any warning, giving the couple no time to react.

The motorcycle struck the vehicle, and both Philipo and Ester died at the scene. The lorry driver reportedly left the area, and his identity has not been confirmed as of the time of reporting.
The loss has shattered the Mtaki family. Philipo had three children from a previous relationship before he married Ester in 2015.
The couple’s deaths leave those children, along with the broader family, to grieve two lives cut short in a matter of seconds.

The family announced that mourning ceremonies would be held on Monday, September 28, 2026, as they prepared to lay the couple to rest.
Beyond grief, the family said they intend to follow up with police to understand what steps, if any, have been taken to trace the lorry driver allegedly responsible for the crash.
