Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has sought to clarify his explosive criticism of the club’s leadership following their 2-0 Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, insisting his comments were driven by frustration and his desire to see the English giants compete for major honours.

The Argentina international took to Instagram on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, a day after questioning the club’s recruitment strategy and demanding greater backing from the hierarchy following United’s disappointing performance in Madrid.

Martinez had specifically expressed dissatisfaction with technical director Jason Wilcox, arguing that the club needed to do more to assemble a squad capable of competing against Europe’s elite. He also questioned whether manager Michael Carrick had received sufficient support during the summer transfer window.

In his latest statement, the centre-back acknowledged the emotions behind his earlier remarks but maintained that his ambition was to see Manchester United return to the top of European football.

He added that representing a club with United’s history and stature carried significant expectations, explaining that his comments reflected his determination to see the team challenge for the biggest trophies.

“My words reflect how I feel and how much I want to see this club competing for the biggest honours,” he stated.

The defender further explained that his call for greater ambition was not simply about recruitment but also about the club’s collective responsibility to improve, strengthen the squad and establish the standards required to compete at the highest level.

“When I talk about wanting more, I’m talking about the ambition we must all have as part of this club,” Martinez said.

“ To keep growing, to become stronger and to have everything we need to compete at the highest level. These are standards we must all hold ourselves to, starting with me.”

Martinez also accepted that the players could not shift responsibility for the team’s struggles entirely to the club’s leadership, placing himself among those expected to deliver better performances on the pitch.

The defender is facing fresh uncertainty following his public criticism of the club’s leadership. The Argentine defender’s contract is due to expire next summer, although United have the option of extending his stay by another year. However, doubts have emerged over whether the club will exercise that clause amid growing tensions surrounding his remarks.
