A Nairobi mother got the shock of her life when a househelp she had welcomed into her home just 48 hours earlier allegedly packed away her belongings, from designer bags to a chapati pan.

Mum Audrey posted a video on Facebook showing the moment she confronted the househelp inside the house, demanding that every stolen item be returned.

How the Theft Came to Light

The ordeal began when Audrey was struck by a medical emergency and urgently needed her national identification card and bank cards.

When she reached for her usual handbag, it was nowhere to be found. Acting on instinct, she checked the househelp’s room and found far more than she bargained for.

“You entered my bedroom and took my bag and even disposed of my important documents. Now I find the chapati pan, my wig, and my daughter’s belongings. Why are you stealing from me?” Audrey confronted the househelp on camera.

The recovered items went well beyond valuables. Audrey found her daughter’s new shoes and clothes, a baby flask, and household items that left her bewildered about the househelp’s intentions.

Audrey explained that she had sourced the househelp through a domestic worker bureau for a temporary, one-week placement while searching for a permanent fit.

Before the arrangement began, she had even taken the woman shopping at a supermarket, buying her whatever she said she needed.

That generosity made the betrayal sting even more.

“You came here; it’s barely 48 hours, and you are stealing from me, including my baby’s flask. Where are you taking the flask. Pack your things and leave, and don’t even try saying sorry I do not trust you anymore,” she told the househelp in the video.

In the footage, the househelp is seen quietly packing her personal belongings while Audrey pulled out item after item that had allegedly been bundled away inside a separate bag.

Audrey also expressed regret that the woman had not simply waited and asked if there was anything she could spare, noting that she would have willingly given her daughter’s outgrown clothes and items in December.

“You could have waited and asked in December if there are my daughter’s things I can spare and I would get you some but you decided to steal even my baby’s new shoes and clothes,” she said.

The incident has reignited conversations among Kenyan parents about the risks of hiring domestic workers without thorough vetting, particularly through agencies that place workers on short-term or trial arrangements.
