Cetirizine: PSK Addresses Women Using Allergy Drug for Vaginal Tightening after Viral Trend

‎The Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya (PSK) has issued an urgent warning over a rapidly spreading social media trend that promotes the use of cetirizine, a common over-the-counter antihistamine, as a vaginal tightening agent.

‎The statement, released on November 5, 2026, comes after widespread online content encouraged women to insert oral cetirizine tablets directly into the vagina, based on the false belief that the drug’s drying effect creates tightness.

‎‎Does cetirizine cause dryness in women?

‎The PSK rejected the core premise of the trend outright, stating that dryness and tightness are not the same thing medically.

‎”Dryness is not tightness. The perception that vaginal dryness is equivalent to vaginal tightening is medically inaccurate. Although antihistamines may cause dryness as a side effect, reduced lubrication does not strengthen vaginal muscles or alter vaginal anatomy. Instead, it may increase friction, discomfort, and the risk of tissue injury,” the Society stated.

‎The PSK further noted that cetirizine tablets are formulated for oral ingestion to treat allergic symptoms such as sneezing, runny noses, and hives.

‎”Cetirizine tablets are made to be swallowed. Their ingredients have not been tested on delicate vaginal tissue,” the statement read.

‎The Society cautioned Kenyans that a medicine being widely available does not make it safe for unintended uses, stressing that social media is not a reliable source of medical guidance.

‎Cetirizine drug shortages

‎Beyond the direct risk to individuals, the PSK flagged a broader public health concern: the viral trend is causing supply disruptions.

‎The Society said it had received reports of increased demand, rising prices, and stock shortages in some pharmacies, leaving patients who genuinely require the drug for allergic conditions without access.

‎”We urge pharmacies to keep to ethical pricing and to ensure that patients who genuinely need cetirizine for allergies are not left without their medicine,” the PSK stated.

‎For anyone who has already attempted the practice, the PSK urged them to stop immediately and seek medical attention if they experience pain, bleeding, burning, itching, unusual discharge, or fever.

‎”Your health matters, and you will be treated with respect and without judgement,” the Society said.

‎PSK calls for responsible content creation

‎The Society called on media personalities and content creators to take greater care when sharing health-related content, urging them to verify that any medical information they publish is evidence-based.

‎PSK president Wairimu Njuki delivered a pointed closing message:

‎”Medicines should be used in the right way, for the right purpose, and with the right professional guidance. When in doubt, ask your pharmacist.”
