Narok Senator Ledam Olekina has suggested that the ongoing conflict in Meru County, where Members of County Assembly (MCAs) are attempting to remove Governor Kawira Mwangaza, is primarily driven by political motivations.
Speaking on Citizen TV’s Daybreak show on Monday, Olekina pointed out that impeachment cases in Kenya, including that of Mwangaza, have not been approached legally and are instead based on political pressures.
“Even in the Senate, we may review the evidence, but ultimately, the decision will be political,” he stated. Olekina highlighted a significant discrepancy in Meru County’s leadership, claiming that while many residents support Mwangaza, others are strongly advocating for her removal.
“There seems to be a cabal that wants to make sure they bring some form of confusion in the governance of that county,” noted Olekina

Governor Kawira Mwangaza was impeached by the county assembly for the third time following a motion that cited gross violation of the constitution and other laws, as well as gross misconduct and abuse of office. During the vote on August 8, 49 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) supported her removal, while three did not vote, and 17 opposed the impeachment motion.
The beleaguered governor has faced relentless pressure from MCAs to resign amid speculations that her declining popularity is undermining the interests of certain groups, particularly since she won her position as an independent candidate. She is now scheduled to face the Senate for further questioning.
