The latest project by Kenya’s multitalented rapper and storyteller, Kennedy Ombima, famously known as King Kaka‘s Year of the Pen, is not just an ordinary album, it is a masterpiece with an inspiring story behind it.
In a world where music often focuses on fame, success, and lifestyle, this project stands out for something deeper: pain, healing, and transformation.
King Kaka, speaking during an interview with media personality Oga Obinna on Monday night, April 13, 2026, opened up about the meaning behind the album, explaining that Year of the Penrepresents a powerful season of renewal after facing some of the most difficult moments in his life.
For him, the project transcends music; he says it embodies survival and a renewed opportunity for life.

Speaking about the inspiration behind the title, he explained that The Year of the Pen signifies God’s restoration of his creativity and his second chance at life, which has made him feel renewed, grateful, and more excited to live after surviving numerous close calls with death.
“Kwa nini nimeita album yangu the Year of the Pen ni kwa sababu God amerestore my pen, I have a new glow, I am excited about life, niko on my second life, actually mimi nimemiss death mara mob,” King Kaka said.
More than just an album
One of the most touching influences on the album is King Kaka’s daughter, who served as the creative director.
In a video, 11-year-old Gweth Lisawanza introduced herself confidently as both a student and a young business-minded creative, saying she balances school life with her passion for art and design.
“I’m Gweth Lisawanza. I am a student who goes to school during the weekdays and I am a business lady,” she said.c

“I am King Kaka’s Art Director; he might also happen to be my dad, but I do not want us to get used to each other.”
She also made it clear that her role in the project is professional, not just symbolic, explaining that she became creative director after being challenged to design the album cover.
“I landed the role of being his creative director after I was asked to come up with the idea for the album cover. He gave me the prompt, ‘The Year of the Pen’. I did a sketch, then sent it to him for him to paint,” she explained.
Ultimately, Year of the Pen is more than a collection of songs; it is a testimony of survival, faith, and renewal.
