The ongoing upgrade of the Jiw-Dendi slum in Awendo town, Migori County, has raised concerns among local residents. The Awendo municipality board’s report reveals that many slum dwellers are worried that the tarmacking of roads could negatively impact their structures.

Johnson Owiro, a member of the Awendo municipality board responsible for town planning, explained that some road expansions have led to buildings encroaching on road reserves. Residents are concerned that further road expansion might force them to demolish their homes and other structures.

Despite their concerns, residents have generally supported the World Bank-funded project. Owiro emphasized the importance of ensuring the project benefits the community without causing undue harm.

“We believe the project should do more good than harm,” Owiro said.

The municipality board has attempted to address these concerns with the project implementers, but so far, there has been little responsiveness. The board continues to advocate for the residents’ concerns to be considered in the ongoing project.
