The Azimio filed a notice to Nairobi Regional Commander Adamson Bungei, informing him of their intention to hold peaceful protests in Nairobi on Monday 27 and Thursday 30, 2023.
“The procession will take place in all the major streets making up the Nairobi Central Business District from dawn to dusk. We, therefore, request your office to deploy enough police officers to guarantee security to attendees and exercise crowd control,” Azimio notified the police.
The letter addressed to Bungei was submitted at the Nairobi Regional Police Headquarters by Azimio leaders including Eugene Wamalwa, Jeremiah Kioni, Wycliffe Oparanya and Roots Party leader George Wajackoyah.
However, Bungei said letters of intent to picket should not be addressed to him, but to the rightful regulating officers in respective police stations.
“The regulating officer is one commanding a police station. The letter has to be served to the police station, guided by the law. So this letter should be delivered to the officer commanding the police station in the area which the procession will be held,” he said.
On Tuesday, Azimio leader Raila Odinga announced that the coalition will be holding mass protests every Monday and Thursday.
He termed the mass protests held on Monday, March 20 as successful insisting that he would not bow down until President William Ruto heeds to their demands.
Raila further condemned the use of force by the police during the demos, saying they will individually bear responsibility for acting against the Constitution.
Earlier Nairobi Commander Bungei termed Azimio’s Monday protests illegal, as they submitted their notice late.
