Hours before news of his death shocked Kenya’s online community, popular TikToker Derrick Omollo was in high spirits, filming a comedic selfie-style video from what appeared to be a bedroom. It would turn out to be his final post.
The clip, shared on his Instagram page with the caption, ‘me and my friend discussing something that’s none of our business,’ shows Omollo reacting with animated surprise during a phone call, delivering exaggerated expressions that had his followers in stitches.
The video has since drawn an entirely different kind of attention.
What happened to Derrick Omollo?
Omollo, a student at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), lost his life on the night of Tuesday, September 1, in circumstances that have left many stunned.
According to accounts from friends, he and a group of companions were making their way back towards the student hostels near Ndarugu Motel when they were ambushed by suspected armed robbers targeting their phones.
As the group fled in different directions, two of the suspects reportedly gave chase after Omollo specifically.
During the frantic escape, he fell into an open quarry, landing head-first on a rock and sustaining injuries that proved fatal.

The timing of the post has struck a deep chord with netizens, who have flooded the comments with grief and reflection.
In the video, a visibly amused Omollo repeats, “What the…. even me, I’m surprised,” reacting dramatically to something being said on the other end of the call.
