A 27-year-old man from Botswana has been detained after South African soldiers found a live pangolin hidden in his bag while he attempted to cross the Limpopo River without proper documentation.
The incident transpired on Wednesday, 26 August 2026, around 19:30, as members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) carried out routine patrols near the Groblersbrug Border Post.
Discovery of a protected species
Upon noticing the individual crossing the river from Botswana, the SANDF soldiers approached and requested his passport as reported by Briefly.co.za.
He was unable to provide the necessary documentation.
During a search of his belongings, authorities discovered a live pangolin, an animal denoted as a Specially Protected Wild Animal under South African legislation.
The man could not adequately explain the origins of the animal or how he acquired it.
Following his arrest, he was taken to the Tom Burke Border Policing, where he faces two charges: possession of a Specially Protected Wild Animal and violation of the Immigration Act 13 of 2002.
The suspect appeared in the Phalala Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 28 August 2026, where proceedings were postponed to 17 September 2026 for a formal bail application and additional police investigations.

Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers, the Limpopo Provincial Commissioner, praised the SANDF and the South African Police Service for their vigilance and cooperation, emphasising their critical role in securing the nation’s borders and protecting endangered wildlife.
