Environment Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has criticized certain leaders for what he described as advancing sectarian and tribal politics. Although he did not name specific individuals, Duale emphasized that leaders must choose between championing their community’s interests or adhering to their oath of office.

“If you are a CS like me, a principal secretary, or a CEO, and you have taken an oath of office on behalf of all Kenyans regardless of their tribe, religion, or origin, you must honor that oath,” Duale stated.

He made these remarks in Bula Medina, Garissa Township Constituency, during the launch of the new building for Markaz al-Rashidat for Islamic Education.

“Even as the Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry, I come from Garissa. However, the oath of office I have taken is for the Republic of Kenya, and that is the privilege I hold,” Duale added.

Duale asserted that all elected leaders, like the President, are obligated to serve the entire country, regardless of who voted for them. He argued that appointed leaders in constitutional offices must also prioritize the interests of all Kenyans.

“You cannot take an oath of office as the President, Deputy President, CS like me, PS, or head of a security agency, and then use your office to promote sectarian and tribal interests,” Duale said.

Duale’s comments come amid accusations directed at Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua by some leaders, including those from his Mt Kenya region, for allegedly promoting regional politics. In response, Gachagua defended his actions, stating that his commitment to protecting his region’s interests comes from his deep love for his people.

“I’m guilty as charged; I love my people, care for them, and think about them,” Gachagua said. “But this does not mean that because I love my people, I have a problem with others.”

The Deputy President also defended his use of his native language during speeches in Mt Kenya, explaining that it is a reflection of his connection with his community.

“The rest of Kenyans are all our friends, they are my people who I agree with, we talk the same language and understand each other,” he added.
His stance to back the one-man one-shilling revenue sharing formula has also put the DP at logger heads with a section of leaders especially those from North Eastern.
The latest move by some 48 MPs from Mt Kenya to vouch for Interior CS Kithure Kindiki as the region’s spokesperson and leader have further complicated things for the DP.
