The tables turned on a notorious thief who had been terrorizing residents of Olekasasi, Ongata Rongai, when locals decided to take matters into their own hands and beat him up. The man, identified only as Collins, was part of a gang that had been violently robbing locals for several months.
His downfall came when he attempted to steal from John Kanata, a local resident, but was cornered by passers-by and severely beaten. Although Collins was captured, his two accomplices managed to escape.
Nyumba Kumi elders eventually intervened and rescued Collins, taking him to the chief. One local, Daniel, explained that residents took action because their repeated reports to the police had been ignored. “We have reported these criminals to the police on several occasions, but nothing is done,” he said.
Students from African Nazarene University have also expressed concerns about the rising insecurity, saying their phones and laptops have been frequently targeted. One student shared, “The thieves throw stones at their victims to disarm them before attacking. They have also been targeting students from Multimedia University and residents of Banglaa.”
Collins is set to be charged.
