A family in Kanjinji village, Mwea, Kirinyaga, is celebrating the release of their daughter, Jane Karimi, who was freed after serving 16 years of a life sentence.
Karimi had been convicted of murder and was serving her sentence at Lang’ata Women’s Prison. Her release followed a successful appeal and family intervention.
Karimi recounted the events leading to her incarceration, explaining, “A fight broke out between my brother, Zachariah Wachira, and me after his child was accidentally struck by a blunt object and died five days later. I was arrested and taken to Wang’uru Police Station. Following investigations, I was sentenced to life in prison. I served time at both Embu Women’s Prison and Lang’ata Women’s Prison, where I was last incarcerated.”
She expressed joy at being free once more. Her 85-year-old mother, Beatrice Muthoni, was overcome with emotion upon reuniting with her 38-year-old daughter after such a long separation.
“I can’t believe it , my daughter is now with me here, I have been taking care of her children despite my age,” she said.
According to Karimi’s relatives, led by Dickson Mutahi, her husband left their children immediately she was arrested.
“We have been helping my mother to take care of her four children. After she was arrested,” he said.
The family held celebrations at the Great victory pentecostal church of God at Kimbimbi, with the pastor, Bancy Muthoni, saying Karimi is now born again.
