An enraged elderly man forced his way into a church and smashed its musical instruments, claiming the congregation had repeatedly ignored his complaints about noise levels in their residential neighbourhood.
A video of the incident, which circulated widely on social media, captured the man striding into the church armed with a stick and using it to strike the pianos and drums while shouting at the people inside.
Why elderly man stormed into church at night
The man revealed that he suffers from high blood pressure and argued that the church’s noise was a direct threat to his health.
“We agreed with the Church that you will never disturb me. I have blood pressure. You want me to go to heaven very quickly?” he said.
He also made clear that the church sat within a residential estate he considered his home. “Who told you to make noise here, this is an estate. I have built my house here,” he said.
At one point, he scattered the drums and struck a table with his stick, prompting a woman seated nearby to quickly move out of the way.
The elderly man singled out a church staff member, Andrew, gripping his shirt with one hand while still clutching the stick with the other. He reminded Andrew that both he and another woman had previously raised the same grievances.
“You were here when we were complaining with another woman about this noise. Do you remember? You want us to fight so that we have a case in court,” he said.
Andrew and other staff members responded by pleading for forgiveness. “Please just forgive us,” Andrew said. The man attempted to strike Andrew but missed as Andrew stepped back.
Before leaving, the elderly man issued a stern ultimatum. He warned that he would revoke an existing agreement that permitted the church to operate between 10am and noon, and called on the congregation to obtain a government licence if they intended to continue making noise in a residential area.
“Even the 10 to noon agreement will cease to operate. If you have a government license allowing you to make noise in an estate then show me,” he said.
He further insisted that the church had no business operating among homes and urged the members to find a commercial location instead.
“I am ready to fight alone if this nonsense continues. We all know God but you don’t go to heaven for making noise,” he added before walking out.
