The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has commended a police officer who refused a Sh1.7 million bribe in Mombasa.

EACC said that in his commendable display of integrity, the officer foiled an attempt to corruptly influence an ongoing investigation into fraudulent activities at the port of Mombasa which led to the arrest of three individuals.

The three, Philip Muigai Nduati, Boniface Aggrey Ouma and Isaac Wanaloba Kenyari, are accused of attempting to bribe a police officer to influence investigations she was conducting into fraudulent deals at the Port of Mombasa.

“The police officer rejected the offer of Sh1.7 million and reported the matter to the EACC,” EACC said.

The three were processed at EACC Mombasa offices and booked at Mombasa Central Police Station where they spent the night on Tuesday pending arraignment.

“They will be charged before the Anti-Corruption Court on Wednesday at 9:00 am. The Commission applauds the Police Officer who declined the bribe offer and instead reported the matter to EACC. This is what is expected of all public officials when they face such ethical dilemmas,” the anti-graft watchdog added.

The incident comes at a time when the anti-graft agency has intensified its efforts to crack down on corrupt individuals within the public service and other departments across the country.

Over the weekend, detectives from EACC in Nairobi arrested a high-ranking police officer on charges of soliciting a bribe of Sh5,000 bribe to secure the release of four suspects detained for drunkenness and disorderly conduct.

The Ruai sub-county police commander was arrested on Saturday evening following a complaint filed against him.

A police report seen by Nairobi News stated in part “Please be informed that today at around 1650 hours, officers from EACC Nairobi arrested the OCS Ruai on allegations that he had received three thousand shillings, treated as a bribe, to secure the release of four detainees held for the offense of being drunk and disorderly.”

Following his arrest, the officer was escorted to the EACC headquarters at Integrity Centre for further questioning.
