Kenyan musician and activist Reuben Kigame has added his voice to the rising opposition against the Finance Bill, 2024. Despite being blind, Kigame has been outspoken about his apprehensions regarding the proposed bill, which he perceives as placing unfair tax burdens on Kenyan citizens.
Taking to his X account, Kigame conveyed his sentiments, asserting, “Folks, I am blind, but I will be on the streets to take my country back. I will not allow wheelchairs to be taxed.”
He emphasized the importance of unity among young people, saying, “Young people don’t fear to speak out. I will be with you on the streets.”
Kigame’s message has struck a chord with numerous Kenyans who are actively protesting against the bill. His involvement has brought attention to the impact of the proposed taxes on individuals with disabilities, adding a new perspective to the #RejectFinanceBill movement.
While the government asserts that the bill aims to bolster local revenue and debt servicing, it has faced widespread criticism over concerns about exacerbating the already high cost of living.
Kigame’s call for unity and resistance has inspired many to join the protests. As events unfold, the government’s response to the warnings from Kigame and the protesters remains uncertain.
