The Kenya national swimming team is keen on reclaiming their Africa Aquatics Zone 3 Championship title at the 9th edition, which starts Friday in Bujumbura, Burundi, at the Entente Aquatic Centre.
The fiesta stretches to November 24, this year.
Kenya previously won the championship in 2020 when it was held in Tanzania but narrowly missed out on the title last year, finishing second in Rwanda.
A strong contingent of 46 swimmers left the country yesterday for Bujumbura led by head coach Engineer Peter Mwangangi, along with his assistants Shadrack Mutiso and Stephie Ondieki, after fine-tuning their skills at the Kasarani Aquatic Centre in preparation for the regional competition.
Head coach Peter Mwangangi expressed confidence in his squad’s readiness and determination to reclaim the top spot.
“My team is well-prepared. We had a training session early today, and the team was highly motivated and in good spirits. With 98% of the swimmers attending camp, I am confident they will perform exceptionally well,” Mwangangi said.
Leading the team is Captain Fania Amollo, who will compete in the Under-15 category. Amollo is optimistic about the team’s prospects.
“I’m confident we will improve our times and perform well overall. Everyone is ready to give their best and make the country proud,” she said.
The event promises to be a thrilling showdown as Kenya looks to stamp its authority on the regional swimming stage once again as they face the hosts Burundi, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Congo, and Sudan.
Additional invited teams include Somalia, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Zambia.
