Residents of Lamu are already warming up to a new climate change policy that identifies and promotes key focus areas in the far-flung county.
According to the residents, it’s a welcome breath of fresh air given the county has suffered from the vagaries of climate change.
The new Climate Change Policy is aimed at reducing the impacts of climate change on the county’s residents and ecosystems.
It is expected to address issues around energy efficiency, conservation of natural resources, sustainable tourism, and capacity building and public education.
This, according to the residents, will help enhance their resilience as vulnerable communities toward challenges that come with climate-related disasters.
The Governor of Lamu County, Mr. Issa Timamy said that “climate change is a global concern that requires global action, and that Lamu was keen to remain sustainable, resilient, and prosperous for future generations.”
The new policy comes at a time when the county is facing increased effects of climate change, including sea-level rise, erosion, drought, and floods.
