Students from Katoloni High School in Machakos County were picked up by their parents on Sunday following a Saturday night fire that destroyed an entire boys’ dormitory. The County TSC Director, Margaret Mwirigi, confirmed that the dormitory, which housed 193 students, was completely burned, including beds and students’ belongings.
Fortunately, no students were injured in the 9 p.m. incident as they were in class for evening prep. However, Mwirigi noted that some students, affected by trauma and shock, were taken to Machakos Level 5 Hospital for treatment and counseling.
She appealed to well-wishers to support the school and mentioned that the school board is working with Education Ministry officials to determine the next steps. While the school was not officially closed, Mwirigi explained that parents had temporarily taken their children home for counseling, and the students are expected to return by Tuesday to resume learning.
Mwirigi assured parents that investigations are ongoing and that anyone involved in the fire will be held accountable.
