Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has reportedly jetted back to the country after a 2-week long trip in the United Kingdom.

Matiang’i, who is currently being pursued by the EACC and the DCI, landed at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport at 10:00 pm on Saturday night aboard KLM Flight 0566.

The embattled former CS is on Monday expected to present himself at the DCI headquarters for questioning.

Before his UK trip, Matiang’i was summoned by the DCI for questioning on an alleged raid at his Karen Home.

The investigative agency accused Matiang’i of publishing false information on an alleged police raid.

EACC, DCI pursue Matiang’i

Investigative agencies have tightened the noose around former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i’s neck by launching other investigations into his assets and how he acquired them.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) last week wrote to the Head of Public Service Commission Felix Koskei seeking certified copies of Declaration of Income, Assets, and liabilities forms for the years 2012 to 2022 including the initial and final declarations.

The letter dated February 27 and addressed to Koskei states: “The commission is carrying out investigations involving former Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Coordination of National Government Dr. Fred Matiang’i.”

“The Commission wishes to request Certified copies of Declaration of Income, Assets, and liabilities forms for the years 2012 to 2022 including the initial and final declarations,” EACC CEO Twalib Mbarak added.

The once-powerful CS was in January 2019 appointed by President Uhuru Kenyatta as the Chairperson of the National Development Implementation and Communication Cabinet Committee.
He was essentially in charge of all National Government programmes and projects and was reporting directly to the head of State.

The probe also seeks to establish if the former CS abused his office to enrich himself. Unconfirmed reports indicate that he is worth more than what he has declared. He was deputized by the former Treasury CS.

According to the Executive Order, his roles included monitoring and evaluating the follow-up mechanisms for resources allocated for National Government Priority Programmes and Projects; ensuring proper utilization and realization of targeted outcomes and also providing coordinated strategic communication to the Public and other stakeholders on the progress of the projects.

The request comes just a few days after Matiang’i failed to appear before the DCI after he was summoned to appear before them on February 24, 2023, over the alleged police raid at his home.

According to his Lawyer Danstan Omari, the former CS nor his legal team were not served with the alleged summon which made him not attend.

The DCI had also obtained a search order to obtain CCTV recordings from his home to establish the facts surrounding the alleged raid.

DCI boss Mohammed Amin said upon completion of the investigations they will take action if any officers from any security agency were involved in any unauthorized activities, or if any false information was knowingly disseminated by anyone to the public.
