A fire broke out at Mavoko Law Courts in Machakos early Friday, burning several files. Police are still assessing the full extent of the damage.
The incident, reported at 4:40 AM by a senior court employee, was logged as a fire incident at Athi River police station within Athi River South subcounty.
“It was reported by a court staffer that there was a fire breakout at the said premise.
Police officers from Athi River police station in the company of DCI officers rushed to the scene where it was established that the fire spread from the court’s archives room and slightly at the accounts room where several files were burnt,” a police source told the Star on Friday.
Mavoko Law Courts is approximately 100 metres from the police station.
Police said the fire brigade from Machakos County Government’s Mavoko subcounty timely responded to the incident and managed to contain the fire.
“The cause of the fire is not yet established. The case is pending under investigations,” the officer said.
He said Directorate of Criminal Investigations detectives attached to Athi River police station had launched investigations into the incident.
