Moi Teaching & Referral denies detaining new mothers over SHA fees

The Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) has clarified reports of detaining new mothers at the Riley Mother and Baby Hospital in Eldoret for failing to clear Social Health Insurance (SHA) fees.

In a press statement on Sunday, 21 September 2025, the MTRH Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Philip Kirwa, said that all affected clients had been discharged and returned safely to their homes.

his follows a short video that went viral on TikTok and a subsequent report by the Daily Nation on September 18, 2025, which indicated that the mothers were unable to leave the hospital after delivery due to non-payment.

“Further Clarification on Discharge of Mothers—Riley Mother and Baby Hospital Reference: TikTok Video; Daily Nation Report dated 18th September 2025; Citizen TV Coverage dated 21st September 2025,” MTRH said.

According to the MTRH Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Philip Kirwa, all mothers who were in the process of discharge have been helped and are reunited with their families.

“Following our earlier communication regarding the status of mothers who were in the process of discharge, we wish to inform the public that all affected clients have been discharged and returned safely to their homes,” MTRH said.

MTRH review on mothers unregistered on SHA

On the other hand, the MTRH boss noted that for mothers who were unable to present the requisite documentation for Social Health Authority (SHA) registration, such as national identification cards or birth certificates, their cases were also reviewed.

He further added that after the review, the mothers were appropriately cleared by the Hospital Credit and Evaluation Committee in accordance with our internal guidelines and patient support protocols.
