Kenyan traders and businesspeople have condemned the anti-government riots led by the Azimio La Umoja coalition as a day of destruction, chaos, and losses.

Nelson Waithaka, chairman of Muthurwa Market, told the media on Tuesday that the protests caused huge losses for market people, particularly those who deal with perishable goods.

He was flanked by leaders from Nairobi County markets such as Wakulima, Korogocho, and Githurai, among others.

Customers who would normally use the City Stadium or Landhies Road to access Muthurwa Market were mugged, according to Mr. Waithaka, while others were stoned on a day that featured running battles between police officers and protesters.

“Siku ya jana watu wa biashara ama wachuuzi wadogo wadogo haswa wale wa bishara ya kuuza chakula walienda hasara kubwa sana jana,” Waithaka said,

“Hizi hasara hatujui nani atagharamia,”

The traders stated that they are unsure who will compensate traders who suffered significant losses during the Monday protests.

According to Waithaka, the demonstrations also affected hundreds of business people from outside Nairobi who ply their trades within the markers.

The traders now want Azimio Coalition to crack down on violent protesters as well as those who took advantage of the opportunity to destroy businesses.

“Maandamano ya sahii ni ya kuharibu bishara na haikuwa ya amani,” Waithaka added.

“Sisi kama wafanyi biashara Nairobi tungetaka waangazie hasara ambazo tutakuwa tukihesabu kila Jumatatu, ni nani atakuwa akigaramia?

The Monday protests, led by Raila Odinga, leader of Azimio la Umoja, were largely chaotic, with numerous videos showing police officers and protesters locked in running battles.

In parts of the City, motorists as well as businesses were pelted with stones, bonfires lit and roads barricaded.

The protest is centered on a standoff over the recent General Election, the outcome of which Raila has rejected, as well as the rising cost of living.
