For smallholder farmers tucked away in the hills around Nyeri, getting fresh produce to market used to be a battle against bad roads and lost time.

The completion of the Kenol-Sagana-Marua dual carriageway is steadily changing that reality, with residents saying the upgraded corridor is reshaping the economic outlook of the entire Mount Kenya region.

Agnes Wambura Murage, a Nyeri County resident, said the difference on the ground was impossible to ignore.

“The Kenol-Marua dual carriageway has brought a lot of development to this region. It has eased movement from the interior parts of the country to the urban centres and opened up rural areas,” she told TUKO

Coffee, Tea and the Race Against the Clock

For farming communities along the corridor, reliable road access is not a convenience — it is a commercial necessity. Crops such as coffee, tea and horticultural produce lose value quickly when they sit in transit too long, making faster movement directly linked to better returns.

“This is a coffee-producing area. We have coffee, tea and other horticultural products that reach the market through this road,” Murage said.

She added that investor interest in the region had grown noticeably since the road improved, with businesses entering areas that once struggled to attract outside capital.

“A lot of investors have invested in this region compared to those years that were behind,” she noted.

More Than Tarmac

The benefits stretching out from the upgraded highway go well beyond the road surface itself. Newton Mwangi, a worker on the highway project, said the surrounding communities had seen a broader wave of improvements accompany the construction.

“The road has brought many advantages. We have access roads and everything surrounding the highway is becoming better. There are hospitals, markets and many access roads,” he said.

Residents pointed to feeder roads and rural electrification as part of the wider package of change, with each improvement reinforcing the next and gradually strengthening the economic base of communities that had long operated at the margins of Kenya’s commercial networks.

By tying production areas more tightly to Nairobi and other large consumption centres, the corridor is helping rural producers compete in markets that were previously out of practical reach. The increase in traffic along the route is also drawing more traders and small businesses into rural centres, creating fresh commercial activity.

One area where residents see room for growth is the deliberate planning of spaces for roadside traders and rest stops, allowing small enterprises to benefit from the added footfall without creating safety hazards on the upgraded road.
