An operation on high-level tax evasion schemes by traders dealing in alcoholic products led to the confiscation of a large consignment of counterfeit alcoholic drinks in Makueni on Monday.
In a statement from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), officers raided a store in Kikima market belonging to Daniel Musau where they impounded 3,000 bottles bearing fake Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) stamps.
This follows a countrywide government crackdown targeting traders evading tax payments.
On January 23, detectives and KRA officials impounded over 300 cartons containing alcoholic drinks in Thika and on January 24, a woman in possession of 200 boxes of counterfeit liquor was arrested in Ruai.
Fake KRA stamps were recovered in both operations.
The crackdown acts in response to a directive from President William Ruto to tame crooked businessmen who have devised new ways of evading taxation.
