Opposition leader Raila Odinga visited his longtime friend, Archbishop Emeritus Zacchaeus Okoth, who is currently receiving treatment at the Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu. Raila posted photos on his X page, showing him with Okoth and attending doctors in the hospital room, expressing wishes for Okoth’s swift recovery.
Reflecting on their enduring friendship, Raila acknowledged Okoth’s support during challenging periods, including facilitating his exile to Uganda.
“I visited Archbishop Emeritus Zacchaeus Okoth, who is currently hospitalised, to wish him a speedy recovery,” Raila said.
He added: “He selflessly enabled my passage to Uganda and ultimate exile during difficult times and I remain grateful.”
Okoth, who retired five years ago, was ordained into the priesthood at the young age of 26. He assumed the role of Archbishop of Kisumu in May 1990. Known for his impactful sermons, he was a vocal critic during both the Kanu regime and President Mwai Kibaki’s administration.
Raila Odinga once recounted an incident in Kisumu where Okoth played a crucial role in aiding his escape from pursuing police during crackdowns on anti-government figures in the 1980s and early 1990s.
Okoth arranged for Raila to leave the Ukweli Pastoral Centre under the cover of darkness, disguised as a priest. He facilitated Raila’s journey on a boat across Lake Victoria, ensuring safe passage to Uganda.
