Tragedy struck on the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway after an ambulance was involved in a fatal crash near Kimende on Saturday, September 28, 2025.
Six people, including a patient, her husband, two relatives, a nurse, and the driver, are feared to have all lost their lives in the accident
The victims were on an emergency transfer when the ambulance lost control at a notorious black spot. The accident has once again drawn attention to the dangers along one of Kenya’s busiest and deadliest highways.
Black spot
The Nakuru–Nairobi route, which is part of the busy Northern Corridor, records some of the highest accident rates in the country. National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) data shows that black spots such as Kinungi, Gilgil, and Kimende remain among the most dangerous.
Many of these accidents are linked to speeding, poor road design, and heavy traffic along the highway.
The Saturday night crash adds to the long list of fatal accidents that have occurred along the route, raising concerns about whether enough has been done to address road safety.
Families and colleagues of the victims have been left devastated, with the tragedy also highlighting the risks medical teams face when responding to emergencies on Kenya’s roads.

The incident has reignited calls for improved road safety measures, stricter enforcement of traffic laws, and stronger emergency response protocols. Road safety advocates say that unless urgent steps are taken, the cycle of tragedies along the highway will continue.
The Saturday crash came just a day after another major accident disrupted transport along the same highway. On Friday, a multi-vehicle accident near Gilgil caused a massive traffic jam that lasted for hours.
The crash, which occurred between Kikopey and St Mary’s Hospital, involved several vehicles, including a truck that overturned and completely blocked the busy road.
The blockage brought movement on both lanes of the highway to a standstill, stranding transit trucks and passenger vehicles in cold evening weather.
Police and emergency response teams were deployed to the scene to clear the wreckage and restore the flow of traffic.
