It was supposed to be a quiet evening ahead of a scheduled event, but for National Assembly Majority Leader Silvanus Osoro and a group of senior politicians, a stroll through Shela village in Lamu turned into a surprisingly humbling experience.
On Tuesday, September 29, Osoro arrived in Lamu alongside Cabinet Secretary Ruku, Leo Wa Muthende, and Mutai Alfred.
With time to spare before the following day’s official engagements, the group decided to venture deep into the village on foot rather than wait around.
What began as a leisurely walk quickly became a social experiment. Osoro proposed a challenge to his companions: stop random residents along the way and ask whether they recognise any member of the group. Mutai, the youngest in the party, was tasked with keeping score for the day.
By the time the group completed their 8km route, they had encountered more than 500 people of all ages and backgrounds.
The numbers told a clear story. Only around 15 residents recognised Osoro, roughly 13 identified CS Ruku, just two knew Wamuthende, and Mutai went unrecognised by everyone they met.
The politicians did not stop at testing their own fame.
They also asked residents to name any Kenyan politician they were familiar with. The responses, Osoro noted, followed a clear pattern.
Local MCA names and parliamentary candidates came up first, followed by sitting MPs and governors. When it came to national figures, only three names stood out consistently across the hundreds of people they spoke to.
Osoro shared the full account on social media, framing it as a light-hearted lesson in just how much political visibility varies beyond Nairobi.
