Professional wrestling has lost one of its most enduring figures. Bill Dundee, a cornerstone of the Memphis wrestling scene for decades, died in the early hours of Sunday, 6 September 2026. He was 82 years old.
His son Jamie, himself a former professional wrestler, confirmed the news, revealing that his father passed away at approximately 3:30 a.m.

His final televised appearance aired just one day before his passing, featuring Memphis Wrestling stars forming a guard of honour to pay their respects to the icon.

Born William Cruickshanks in Scotland and raised in Australia, Dundee built his legendary status far from home, carving out a celebrated career in the American South.
He became synonymous with Memphis wrestling, where his charisma, ring psychology and ability to connect with audiences set him apart from his peers.
His rivalry and tag-team partnership with Jerry “The King” Lawler remains one of the most celebrated chapters in regional wrestling history, captivating crowds across Tennessee and beyond for years.
In terms of championship accolades, Dundee was a nine-time AWA Southern Heavyweight Champion and a multiple-time AWA World Tag Team Champion.
His contribution to the sport was formally recognised in 2017 when he was inducted into the Memphis Wrestling Hall of Fame.
Dundee’s career stretched across more than five decades, a remarkable feat in a physically demanding profession.
He officially laced up his boots for the last time at his retirement match in December 2019, bowing out on his own terms after a lifetime dedicated to the craft.
Wrestling tributes described him as a performer whose influence extended well beyond his championship reigns, shaping the careers of countless wrestlers who came up through the Memphis territory.
