Two suspected gang members were lynched on Friday and their bodies set ablaze after reportedly forcefully intruding on a funeral fundraising event in Mombasa.

Reports say that the duo, burnt beyond recognition, were part of a group of nine armed assailants who stormed the event before assaulting and robbing mourners in attendance.

Police say that the assailants stole a laptop, musical instruments, phones, and cash at the event before vandalizing three vehicles.

Following the incident, a mob reportedly tracked down the suspects, resulting in the lynching of the two individuals in question who were then burnt beyond recognition.

“The incident was reported and booked as malicious damages. Police officers visited the scenes and established that two bodies were burnt beyond recognition,” a police report documenting the incident reads in part.

The bodies of the deceased persons have since been moved to Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital for storage pending post-mortem.
